Founded in 2008 by William Lane, the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble (HKNME) is Asia's leading new music group. Presenting contemporary music to the highest possible standard.

The Ensemble has led numerous world and regional premieres of important contemporary works — a number of which commissioned by the HKNME — at prestigious music festivals and venues around the world, including the Hong Kong Arts Festival, New Vision Arts Festival (HK), Tongyeong International Music Festival / ISCM (South Korea), ECHOFLUXX Festival of New Media (Czech Republic), CYCLE Music and Art Festival (Iceland), Shanghai New Music Week (CN), Beijing Music Festival (CN), Hong Kong Week (TW), MONA FOMA (Australia), Hong Kong Music Series (London), Angel Orensanz Center (New York City) and Wilsey Center for Opera (San Francisco).

  • The Ensemble has collaborated with renowned organisations such as Zuni Icosahedron, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Guangdong Modern Dance Company, soundpocket, Studio Acht and Alice Theatre Laboratory. The HKNME has also been invited to organise events in partnership with the Hong Kong Arts Centre, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, Spring Workshop, Asia Society Hong Kong Center, Osage Gallery and the Goethe-Institute Hongkong. The HKNME is also a regular collaborator with music departments of many tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts where the Ensemble was Resident Company from 2015 - 16.

    The HKNME has been annually funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council since 2012.

WILLIAM LANE.

Artistic & Managing Director

  • Lane performs as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician in Australia, Asia, Europe and North America. He studied under Jan Sedivka, Bruno Giuranna and Garth Knox, as well as in Germany at the International Ensemble Modern Academy, and in Switzerland at the Lucerne Festival Academy under Pierre Boulez. He was a prizewinner of Valentino Bucchi Competition in Rome in 2005. Lane was principal viola of Ensemble Resonanz and a member of Hong Kong Philharmonic; and has appeared as guest violist of Ensemble Modern and Lucerne Festival Strings. Based in Hong Kong since 2008, he is founder, Artistic & Managing Director and violist of Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Asia’s most active professional chamber ensemble dedicated to new music. In 2013, he was awarded Young Artist (Music) by Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

DANIEL LO.

Director of Programming

  • Daniel Ting-cheung Lo is one of the most active composers in Hong Kong, frequently commissioned by local music groups such as Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. Lo’s works cover a wide range of musical genres, from orchestral to vocal pieces. One of Lo’s current compositional interests is to seek ways to integrate music with Hong Kong literature. Lo completed his PhD (Composition) at the University of York in the UK in 2017, fully supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund. Previously, he studied composition at the University of Hong Kong where he graduated with first class honours in 2009 and then earned an MPhil (Music Composition) in 2012.

TIM CHAN.

Production Manager

  • Chan Ting Cheung Tim (b.1988), Hong Kong composer, percussionist, media artist. Graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University Bachelor of Arts in Music (Honours), Minor in Visual Arts. Tim met Hong Kong New Music Ensemble (HKNME) from the contemporary music festival Modern Academy in 2014. He worked as a guest percussionist later on, then he joined the Ensemble as Project Coordinator during 2015-2018. As a composer, Tim is delighted to be commissioned by HKNME in 2021.

    Currently, Tim serves as Production Manager at the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble.

    Tim believes that all kinds of production inputs are creative and aesthetically demanding. There is an aesthetic judgement behind all buttons we press. We create art together.

SHELLEY NG.

Marketing & Communications Officer

  • Shelley is currently associate musician of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. Before joining the group, Shelley studied at the USC Thornton School of Music in Piano Performance with Bernadene Blaha. During her studies, she was the staff pianist of studios of Midori Gotō, Pamela Frank, Bing Wang and Margaret Batjer. Shelley earned her Master’s degrees from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with distinction under the tutelage of Katya Apekisheva and subsequently from Rice University, where she taught piano and chamber music. She was awarded the First Class Honours Bachelor’s in Music from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where she was on the Faculty of Arts Dean’s List in all three years of her studies. Her primary teachers Virginia Weckstrom in the United States, Nancy Loo in Hong Kong and coaches Cho-Liang Lin and Norman Fischer have become important mentors in her music career.

DEBORAH WAUGH.

Education & Community Outreach Facilitator

  • Deborah Waugh has been actively engaged in the Hong Kong arts scene since moving to the city over two decades ago. She was a founding member of the HKNME, and is currently overseeing its education and outreach programmes as well as working at The University of Hong Kong.

    Deborah is an experienced chamber and orchestral player and worked as a casual percussionist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for many years. She also performed with the Australian Opera, Australian Ballet, Sydney Theatre Company, Australian Contemporary Theatre Company, and other leading Australian ensembles.

    She was a founding member of Aradia Ensemble in Toronto and performed with the Canadian world music ensemble Musaïc at Expo '98 in Lisbon. With countless performances and recordings in a diverse range of genres, Deborah has performing diplomas from the Victorian College of the Arts, a Master of Music from the University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. from The University of Hong Kong.

VANESSA CHAN.

Operations Manager

  • Vanessa Chan joined the administration team of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble in Autumn 2021. Outside administrative duties, Vanessa is a violinist who performs actively in local ensembles, such as the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Freespace Ensemble. Before her return from the United Kingdom in 2021, Chan was the Concertmaster of Southbank Sinfonia at BBC Prom in 2019 and she was invited to perform in leading orchestras in the UK. In 2016, Vanessa made her debut as a violinist with the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble when the group performed in Tongyeong International Music Festival in Korea.

    Chan received two postgraduate degrees from Guildhall School of Music & Drama and her undergraduate degree from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Her violin teachers include Andrew Watkinson and Ho Hong Ying.

JULIAN LAW.

Project Officer

  • Julian Law is a trumpeter and composer. He has written for various music labels such as Incepto Music, Bliss Eternal and music libraries viz Sonoton, Cavendish Music, Melodise and has had his works published on National Geographic (2008) and locally on short films such as Supercapitalist (2012) and mobile games Pong Pong Egg (2017) .

    He studied Jazz Trumpet at Humber College in Toronto Canada, Sound and Music Recording at Recording Arts Canada and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Business from Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA.

    Julian also has a background in UX/UI having worked at Soundbrenner being directly involved with the 1st generation creation of the physical product & mobile app. He is also an experienced music educator having taught at international schools in Hong Kong.
