Resident Conductor

Highly praised for his remarkable rhythm by La Presse Montreal, multi-talented conductor and percussionist Vicky Shin has collaborated with various ensembles across Asia, North America, and Europe in both conducting and percussion. Vicky is currently the Resident Conductor of Hong Kong New Music Ensemble where he leads recording projects and premieres of works. In 2023, he appeared as the conductor of Love Streams, a dance opera at the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival. He is the Founder/Music Director of Ensemble Traversée, a group which aims at bringing music that travels between periods and genres to local audiences. Vicky finds the interaction between performers and composers unique and inspiring, hence he enjoys focusing on the interpretation of contemporary music. He worked with Steve Reich and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and he was the assistant to Brad Lubman. He was also the chorus master of the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Angel’s Bone by Du Yun in its Asian premiere.

Euna Kim, native of Seoul, Korea, is an active performer. She has been invited to several music festivals in Europe, U.S., Japan and China. She successfully completed performing the concerts “Complete Beethoven Sonatas for Piano and Violin” between 2009 and 2010. SInce 2016 she has been performing all sonatas by Brahms and works that influenced the composer. She has also been participating in numerous contemporary music festivals in Europe, Hong Kong, and Korea. She also released CDs with Arts Council Korea as a member of Contemporary Music Ensemble Eclat in Korea. Euna is currently playing for Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. She studied with world renowned violinists Nam-Yun Kim and Zahkar Bron .

Honolulu-born violinist Patrick T.S. Yim has performed on stages around the world, including Carnegie Hall and David Geffen Hall (New York), Seoul Arts Center, Harpa Concert Hall (Reykjavík), Hong Kong City Hall, Severance Hall (Cleveland), Orchestra Hall (Chicago), Teatro alla Scala (Milan), and the Musikverein (Vienna). A core member of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Yim was Assistant Professor of Music at Hong Kong Baptist University from 2017-2021. He also taught violin and chamber music at Stony Brook University, the Cleveland Institute of Music Preparatory Department, the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, the Flatirons Chamber Music Festival, the Rushmore Music Festival, and the Sulzbach-Rosenberg International Music Festival. He presented lectures and masterclasses at institutions in different parts of the world.

Kitty Cheung is a member of LENK Quartet (Artist-in-Residence of The Chinese University of Hong Kong for academic year 2022-2023), Romer String Quartet and Contrast Trio, Associate Musician of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, and Adjunct Lecturer at the Hong Kong Baptist University. She was the Associate Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta in 2011-2017. In the past she has performed in the London Symphony Orchestra, Welsh National Opera Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. As a soloist, she performed with Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Hong Kong City Chamber Orchestra. Her childhood teachers included late Professor Lin Yao-Ji, Qiu Xin-Yeh, Li Hou-Yi and Ho Hong-Ying. She received her doctoral and undergraduate degrees from the Eastman School of Music under the tutelage of Charles Castleman and Zvi Zeitlin, and two master degrees from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she studied with David Takeno.

William Lane performs as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician in Australia, Asia, Europe and North America. He studied under Jan Sedivka, Bruno Giuranna and Garth Knox, as well as in Germany at the International Ensemble Modern Academy, and in Switzerland at the Lucerne Festival Academy under Pierre Boulez. He was a prizewinner of Valentino Bucchi Competition in Rome in 2005. Lane was principal viola of Ensemble Resonanz and a member of Hong Kong Philharmonic; and has appeared as guest violist of Ensemble Modern and Lucerne Festival Strings. Based in Hong Kong since 2008, he is founder, Artistic & Managing Director and violist of Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Asia’s most active professional chamber ensemble dedicated to new music. In 2013, he was awarded Young Artist (Music) by Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

A keen chamber musician, Pun Chak-Yin has performed at St. John’s Smith Square, “Concert of Finland 100 & Hong Kong 20th return”, and “The 19th China Shanghai International Arts Festival”. He studied at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Royal Academy of Music under the tutelage of Ms. Karey Kwok‐Chee Ho and Prof. David Strange. His studies were supported by numerous local and overseas scholarships. He is currently Associate Musician with the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and faculty at the Junior Music Programme of HKAPA.

Simon Hui studied double bass, cello and classical guitar. He was a member of the Hong Kong Philharmonic double bass section from 1987 to 2007. He was also Principal Bass of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong until 2013. Simon has been a member of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble since 2009. Also active in the non-classical scene, Simon was a founding member of the jazz and world music influenced group Han Shan, and the improvisation group CIMG (Collective Improvisation Music Group). He has been a dedicated teacher since the 1980s.

Kelvin Ng won several international double bass competitions, and he has been praised for his artistic interpretation and musicianship. He frequently served as principal bass of the Yale Philharmonia and Eastman Philharmonia, performed with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and served as guest principal with the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra. He also participated in prominent festivals internationally. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Kelvin began studying the double bass at 6. He was a recipient of multiple scholarships including the George Wellington Miles Fellowship and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund. His major mentors included Prof. James VanDemark and Prof. Donald Palma from the United States. He earned the bachelor degree and master degree at Eastman School of Music and Yale School of Music respectively.

Prize winner of Schoenfeld International String Competition and International Competition 'Giovanni Musicisti - Città di Treviso', Italy, Chor Kai Hei is currently a cellist of Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Ensemble-in-Residence at Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Artistic Director of local music group Musicademics. As an orchestral cellist, he was the first Hong Kong-er to be appointed as principal cellist in both the RCM Symphony and RCM Philharmonic. He also guest-led the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, Hong Kong String Orchestra, Gustav Mahler Orchestra Hong Kong and most of the leading youth orchestras in Hong Kong. He also worked with London Symphony Orchestra and Hong Kong Sinfonietta. As an educator, he is on the faculty of Education University of Hong Kong and he is serving as orchestral Tutor in various famous schools.

Angus Lee has toured to international music festivals as flautist of Hong Kong New Music Ensemble since 2016. Angus undertook rigorous specialist training in the field of new music interpretation at the Lucerne Festival Academy under the supervision of musicians of Ensemble Intercontemporain. Parallel to his work as a performer, Angus maintains an active schedule as a composer, and his works have been performed at international festivals. His first opera, Chasing Waterfalls, created in conjunction with the Berlin-based sound artist collective klingklangklong, was premiered at Semperoper Dresden in 2022 and subsequently toured to Hong Kong’s New Vision Arts Festival. He currently teaches at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts; he is an assistant lecturer at the University of Hong Kong, where he is pursuing his doctoral studies in composition. He is also flute faculty of the Lucerne Festival Academy in 2022 and 2023.

Linus Fung is a clarinettist who gives classical, contemporary and improvisatory musical performances in Hong Kong actively. Linus is a member of Hong Kong New Music Ensemble , Wuji Ensemble, Freespace Ensemble, LENK Quartet and TimeCrafters. He has performed in Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong New Vision Arts Festival, Freespace Jazz Festival, Shanghai New Music Week, Seoul International Computer Music Festival, Macau Huan Yuan Exhibition, and various Arts events. Linus graduated from the Music Department at The Chinese University of Hong Kong majoring in clarinet under the tutorship of Martin Choy, and pursued his Master of Music degree at the Royal Northern College of Music under the tutorship of John Bradbury, Lynsey Marsh and Nicholas Cox. Linus is a clarinet tutor of the Education University of Hong Kong, Caritas Institute of Higher Education and Diocesan Girls’ Junior School.

Stephenie Ng performs a wide range of chamber music including rarely-performed repertoire and contemporary music. She was a recipient of numerous scholarships, and she earned a Bachelor degree of music with First Class Honours at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and pursued master and doctoral degrees in the United States. Her principal teachers include May Lam, John Schertle, Ayako Oshima and Charles Neidich. Stephenie earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Manhattan School of Music in 2017, where she was appointed the coordinator of Woodwind Lab from 2014-16. Recently she has taken up managerial roles in musical events and programmes in Hong Kong. She is currently an advisor for undergraduate and post-graduate honours projects and a faculty member of the Junior Music Programme at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

Leung Tak Wing is a graduate of Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she completed a Master degree specialising in orchestral artistry. She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance from the Royal Academy of Music and a Bachelor of Music from Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. Tak Wing now works as a bassoonist and teacher. She frequently collaborates with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and Macao Orchestra. She is a core member of Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong where she performed as a guest soloist in Vivaldi Unmasked with great success. She joined Viva! Pipers in 2015 and the group has been collaborating with Premiere Performances of Hong Kong in performing at local and international schools. She is a founding member of REED4BLE, an innovative ensemble of reed instruments plus Ukulele that aims to connect people around the world through music.

Charles Ng is regarded as a prominent classical saxophonist from Hong Kong. He has been teaching numerous private students throughout his career. He has given masterclasses internationally. He is a member of the world-renowned saxophone quintet Five Sax – a professional Vienna based ensemble. He is also the co-director of the Dawn of Asia Saxophone Project (DASP) – an international saxophone ensemble assembled by elite saxophonists from all over the Pan-Asia area. He has worked with the MIT Saxophone Ensemble, Züruch Saxophone Collective and Hong Kong Saxophone Ensemble. He is also a guest saxophonist at the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. His mentors include Lars Mlekusch, Jia-Shou Tasi and Michael Campball. Charles is proud to be an artist and endorser of the D’Addario Woodwinds and Selmer Paris Saxophone.

Alfred graduated from Royal Academy of Music. He frequently performs with various ensembles, including Philharmonia Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, the Manson ensemble, Hong Kong Philharmonic orchestra etc. He frequently participates in high profile performances such as a China Tour with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Last Night of the Proms in 2019. As a soloist, Alfred recorded Saint Saens' Morceau de Concert for the RTHK Radio in 2016. He won second prize in the Wales Llangollen International Music Festival where he represented Hong Kong. Alfred premiered Matt Rogers’ Of the wonderful Nature of Air' with the London Sinfonietta. He was selected for the Lucerne Festival Academy in Switzerland collaborating with composers including George Benjamin, Thomas Kessler and Wolfgang Rhim.

Ben Pelletier was raised in the wilds of Alaska before being awarded the Most Outstanding Musician Award at the McDonald's All-American Band. He studied trombone at the Eastman School of Music. Ben Pelletier has established an active performing career across both the classical and commercial/pop scenes. In addition to his work with City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong since 2003, he performs with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and other top orchestras and ensembles in Hong Kong and South-East Asia, and has served as band leader and trombonist for numerous West End/Broadway-style productions. In addition to playing in and managing the popular Pete Moore Band, he has also performed live and recorded with many of Asia's best-known stars.

Edwin Wong is a versatile performer and educator based in Hong Kong. Edwin performs regularly with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. In July 2021, Edwin gave a trumpet chamber recital “Paths”, where he premiered new works from emerging local composers Justin Wong and Kenneth Tam. In 2019, Edwin attended the Aspen Music Festival, where he worked with artists including the American Brass Quintet, Raymond Mase and Thomas Hooten. Edwin did his Master of Music degree at Rutgers University (New Jersey, USA), and Bachelor of Arts degree at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where his trumpet professors were Kenneth DeCarlo and Christopher Moyse.

Fascinated by the distinguished colors of the percussion instruments, Karina Mei Ying, Yau is dedicated to explore and bring out the dynamic of percussive sound. Karina completed her Master of Music in Percussion Performance at New York University with scholarship. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts (Music) degree in Percussion Performance and Pedagogy from the Hong Kong Baptist University. Karina has particular interest in percussion chamber music and aims to pursue this as her goal. She is the founder member of local percussion group Rhythmaker. The group was selected by Premiere Performance Hong Kong in their Chamber Music in Schools lineup. She is the chairperson of Music Pi, the group promotes local composers and they present cantonese music storytelling concerts.

Karen Yu is a percussionist, sound artist, and interdisciplinary arts researcher who uses sound-making as a medium to question and redefine the relationship between audience and performer. Constantly in pursuit of new possibilities in the performing arts culture, Yu is interested in curating cross-disciplinary collaborations and performances that weave spaces and people together. Based in Hong Kong, Yu is the Artistic Director of Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong, the Co-Founder of the chamber percussion group The Up:Strike Project, and an Associate Musician of Hong Kong New Music Ensemble.

Linda Yim is a core member of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. She joined the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra as guest principal Keyboard for the 2022 season. Linda currently teaches at the Hong Kong Baptist University and Hong Kong University. Linda graduated from the Hong Kong Baptist University, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Royal College of Music in London and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney where she obtained her Master of Music Studies degree majoring in piano. Linda is dedicated to performing in solo and chamber music recitals. She has performed with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Hong Kong Bach Choir and Zuni Icosahedron. Shelley is currently associate musician of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. She has performed extensively on three continents in renowned venues including Carnegie Hall, Seiji Ozawa Hall, Harris Hall, and Milton Court. She was invited to perform at the Tanglewood Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Hong Kong Arts Festival and Taiwan International Festival of Arts. Before joining the group, she was the piano faculty and chamber music coach at the Rice University Preparatory Program and staff pianist of studios of Midori Gotō, Pamela Frank, Bing Wang and Margaret Batjer at University of Southern California. Shelley earned her Master’s degrees from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with distinction and subsequently from Rice University.

Renowned sheng virtuoso Loo Sze Wang has many awards under his belt, and has been active both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. He has collaborated with different performing groups internationally. Loo has also premiered several sheng concertos, the notable pieces being Miroir de Macao by Lam Bun-ching, and Hark the Phoenix Soaring High and Twas the Thawing Wind by Chan Hing-yan. In 2009, he was Artist-in-Residence of Cornell University in New York, the United States. As Artist Associate of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta in 2012, he went on tour with the orchestra to North America. Loo is a founding member of the group Chinese Music Virtuosi, which was Ensemble-in-Residence of the Department of Music of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2011-12.
